A properly designed patient diary or ePRO can bring tremendous benefits to the conduct and outcome of a clinical trial. In this trial sponsored by AstraZeneca, HealthDiary Inc designed a patient diary that generated record-breaking patient diary compliance of 99.9%. Furthermore, the smartphone based patient diary had a background algorithm implemented to detect symptom progression toward a COPD exacerbation. The symptom monitoring algorithm was able to detect all COPD exacerbations, allowing health care providers to address them in a timely manner.
